Paul Graham says Alexa is “behaving evilly”

Statsaholic got covered by TechCrunch (again) this morning, and as usual, the comments are fun to follow. Take this one, for instance, by one of my idols in the tech world:

I think it’s time for Alexa to die. Their data was always dangerously misleading, and now they’re behaving evilly (in the Google sense) as well. If anyone wants to build a replacement for them, Y Combinator would be happy to fund it.

How can Amazon/Alexa keep on the offensive with me when they read stuff like this? I’ve offered to hand over the alexaholic.com domain to them, and pay them a reasonable fee for their traffic graphs while they finally get an official api in place for something thousands of webmasters have been using for free for 5 years, but still they escalate.

I truly want this to work out positively for both myself and Alexa. Today our lawyers are discussing, and I hope to have positive news to report soon.

Good luck man. I’ve found it’s actually much more difficult to find out how well my site’s doing now that alexaholic isn’t working. Alexa doesn’t cut it.

If you need lawyers to settle stuff like that, then something must have gone terribly wrong…

  3. Gregory Kohs says:

Ron, could you tell us how you were transposing Alexa’s “Page views (percent)” into Statsaholic’s “Page views (per million)”? Wouldn’t this require you to know the grand total number of page views on the Internet, every day?

Please e-mail me with an answer when you respond.

Hmm, alexa ruined everything…for one, bryan is right…it’s a lot harder to view the stats and compare your competition…I just want alexaholic to work again!

  5. Eric says:

Why not just start using compete.com’s data?

Paul didn’t mince words, did he? LOL. Alexa has their heads up their a**es on this one.
